The second annual Cambridge Festival of Illustration is coming this November! It is hosted by the Master of Arts in Children's Book Illustration at the Cambridge School of Art which is the best such degree in the country, if not in the world. Co-host is Heffers Bookshop. This is going to be an absolutely fantastic event. And just look at these beautiful illustrations.

Three of the best newly-published graduates introduce and sign copies of their new picturebooks:
My Grandpa by Marta Altés
I like this simple colour scheme: brown, red, and black. One red bear and one red bird.

Oliver by Birgitta Sif
This cover makes me want to know what's going on. I like the clutter, the muted hues and the boy's goggly eyes.

Red Cat, Blue Cat by Jenni Desmond
This book promises to be such fun, with these two grumpy cats, one striped red, the other dotted in blue.

• Wed 7 Nov 2012, 3 pm (Anglia Ruskin University, East Rd, Lord Ashcroft Building, Room LAB 026)
Beatrice Alemagna, internationally renowned, award-winning picture book creator from Italy presents and discusses her work.
Heffers, Trinity St, 6 pm: Beatrice Alemagna signs her work.
This reminds me a little of Roger Duvoisin and a little of Edward Gorey. I find the street with its schematic trees and witty shadows melancholy, and the big golden lion is a surprise.

What makes this cover so intriguing is that it gives nothing away.
• Fri 9 Nov, 11 am - 1 pm (Heffers, Trinity St)
James Mayhew, million-selling author of the Katie and Bella series, in conversation with Prof. Martin Salisbury (Cambridge School of Art).
Velázquez's Spanish infanta plus 21st C. girl, books strewn on the carpet and one Baroque curtain: what a great mix.
