Three arty things in May 2024: Politics, giraffes and Cambridge's tiniest gallery

Three arty things in May 2024

Local Syrian artist Issam Kourbaj at Kettle's Yard and the Heong Gallery. Ends 26 May 2024. Mind-challenging, conceptual, political.

Linked from Kettle's Yard.

Giraffes. They call themselves a 'sculpture trail'. But are they really, though?  They are a charity event, and on the 19 June you can bid for them, and before that, donate money.  Every now and again, these  animals appear; a few years ago, it was cows, and I've seen dinosaurs in Norwich. The animals are manufactured by 'Wild in Art', 'leading producers of spectacular, mass-appeal public art events' (source). The sculptures are made of 'lightweight, fire resistant fibreglass', finished with a white primer and ready to paint by local artists (source). So each CB giraffe is an identical mass-produced 3-D object that is then individually painted by a raft of artists. So the art really consists in a painting trail, not a sculpture trail as such.  Although why can figures mass-produced by a company not be called 'sculpture'?  Food for thought.

In the meantime, there are some more or less jolly giraffes hanging around in expected and unexpected places but, I have to say, giraffes don't really have much local resonance as creatures. At least the cows of a few years back had local live counterparts.

There's always something exciting or sweet or intriguing at the unusual and tiny Bird Box Gallery in St Thomas' Square.  In March it was Alistair Burgass's carved and painted sculpture. What will it be in May?

What's on in May: 3 Cambridge highlights

Fitzwilliam Museum: Michelangelo's bronzes.  Absolutely extraordinary.  I haven't seen these yet but it's just breathtaking that we might have hitherto unsuspected Michelangelos here in our town.
Until 9 August 2015.

Cardozo Kindersley Workshop centenary walk.  Pick up a free leaflet with a map from the Fitzwilliam shop on King's Parade.  Or take the virtual tour via this video here.
This lettering workshop is everywhere in Cambridge.  What a gem to have in our town.

Museums at night.  14 and 15 May 2015.

Thanks for reading and have a lovely day.

Surprise! A mosaic in a hospital.

There's a mosaic in Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.

Yes, in a hospital.  You can find art in a hospital.  In fact, there is lots of art Addenbrooke's, and I think it's such a lovely idea to enhance the environment for patients, visitors and workers.

Also, it's a really nice mosaic.

It's all about people reading.  And disporting themselves in nature.

\\

I do like the way shadows look in a mosaic.

How the tiles follow the shape of the objects:  a 'knit' shape for the socks; a 'stripey' shape for the towel; a 'columnar' shape for neck and arms.  And higgledy-piggledy colour riot for the meadow.

I love the way the black-and-white geometry of the newspaper contrasts with the floral blue-and-white tiles of the other reader's frock.

Hello, watering can, with the not-grey shadow effects.

A sweet touch, this black-and-white "poster" in a 1950s skinny-line curlicue style.

The artist is Jim Anderson.  He's made a number of museums and has helpfully included his website on his signature tile.  I warn you, though: the site's really out-of-date.

Let that be a warning to all artists who think it might be a good idea to include online info within their work...
